Imagine York
Welcome to Imagine York
Imagine York was created to showcase photographs of York held by City of York Libraries and the City Archives.
Since the early days of the camera photographers have been drawn to the beautiful and historic city of York.
This online archive contains thousands of beautiful images of York, carefully researched by a team of expert volunteers. They show the many changes that have taken place in the city over the last 150 years.
Through these photographs you can:
- Walk forgotten streets and meet people who lived in the city's historic heart and the less well known slums and back streets
- Enjoy an idyllic afternoon pleasure boating on the great River Ouse and join the bargemen on the Foss Navigation
- Meet the police force from the 1880s, the city's last Bellman or the rather morose members of the Boys Jovial Club
- See the devastating effect flooding has had on the daily lives of the people and watch them cope with humour and flair
As well as looking at the photographs in the collection we hope you will visit our Lifelines pages, where you will gain a glimpse into the lives of three people who lived in York at the beginning of the 20th century.
